Did you know that you can recycle soft plastics? Most large supermarkets will take the plastics and use specific machinery to cut and melt down to be recycled.
You just gotta do the scrunch test… If it scrunches up easily, you can toss it in!
Here’s a list of what you can collect in your soft plastic bin:
- bread bags
- biscuit wrappers
- paper goods packaging
- pasta and rice bags
- frozen food and veggie bags
- confectionery bags (not that we eat any of that stuff….)
- plastic bags
- cereal box liners.
Find your nearest spot to take your soft plastics to be recycled and more information on what else you can toss in!
TOP 5 TIPS ON HOW TO BE A WASTE FREE TOSSER!
- Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Water comes out of the tap for free.. I repeat… FREE! Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste.
- Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably stainless steel or glass rather than plastic, with you when traveling or at work.
- Never have I been more attracted to a water bottle than I have with my Earth Bottle, I had no idea how good it was when I purchased one at the markets.. it keeps ice frozen for more than 24 hours! Couldn’t be more impressed!
- Think before you buy
- Go online, (gumtree is a beautiful place and there’s some magic at Facebook marketplace too), to find new or gently used second hand products.
- Check out garage sales, op shop, markets, suitcase rummages! Oh the fun!
- Borrow instead of buying.
- Borrow a nice outfit for a wedding
- Borrow a Ski Jacket for going on holidays!
- Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books.
- Share power tools and other appliances. Get to know your neighbours while cutting down on the number of things cluttering your closet or garage.
- Buy smart + waste free
- Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging.
- Wear clothes that don’t need to be dry-cleaned, you’re talking to a girl who has not picked up an iron in more than a decade! Saving power and time… Amen Sister!
- Quality! Quality! Quality!! Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you’ll be happy when you don’t have to replace items as frequently (and this means less waste!).
- Keep electronics out of the trash.
- Keep your phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
- Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
- Recycle your mobile phone.
